Would it be daring to say that Château de Meursault is to Burgundy what Versailles is to Paris? It’s tempting all the same! And with good reason: the prestigious estate has existed for nearly ten centuries, making it one of the oldest wine-producing châteaux in the Côte de Beaune. As for its appellation d’origine contrôlée white wine, it has yet to cease to seduce the most discerning connoisseurs. Discover this nugget on the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne!

One castle, a thousand years of history

The history of Château de Meursault is closely linked to that of Burgundy. It all began in the 11th century (no less!), when the Capetian Robert I, Duke of Burgundy, granted the fiefdom of Moulin Foulot to one of his squires. It wasn’t until 1973, when it was restored, that the name Château de Meursault came into being. The year 2012 marked a turning point in its history, thanks to ambitious projects undertaken by the Halley family with the aim of restoring this Burgundy jewel to its rightful place. Since then, the eighteenth-century Italian-inspired residence has become an emblematic wine estate in Burgundy.

A village story... and a grape variety story!

If you’re a literary buff wondering, Château de Meursault is not named after the famous Camus hero, but rather after the village in which it is located. That’s right! Meursault is first and foremost oneof the leading wine-producing villages in the Côte de Beaune and a must-see on the Burgundy Grands Crus route. And above all, it’s a prestigious appellation for the Chardonnay grape, the world’s benchmark for great white wines!

4 reasons to book a visit to Château de Meursault

01 - For its underground labyrinth

The special feature of Château de Meursault lies just a few metres underground. These are, of course, the Cistercian-style cellars dug beneath the estate between the 12th and 16th centuries. In all, there are more than 3,500 metres of underground galleries built over 500 years ago. And this is where the magic happens! With its oak casks and wines from the Meursault, Pommard and Volnay appellations, the huge cellar is undoubtedly the highlight of your visit to the château.

02 - For biodiversity in the park and the gourmet gardens

*A natural vegetation bordering the watercourses, made up of trees, shrubs and plants that stabilise the banks, filter the water and shelter a rich biodiversity.

03 - For its Italian-inspired architecture

In the19th century, the owners of Château de Meursault decided to give the estate a refined look, in the spirit of Italian villas. Although it was completely renovated in 2024, the property still retains some elements of this southern architecture. With its arched windows and galleries opening onto the park in the style of a loggia, Château de Meursault pays homage to Tuscan classicism. Not forgetting its openness to nature, which completes this 100% dolce vita harmony.

04 - For its vineyard

From the estate’s huge terrace, your eyes are drawn to the vineyards stretching into the distance. This is the Clos du Château! Surrounded by a remarkable dry stone wall, this parcel of over 8 hectares is planted with Chardonnay grapes. Located in the prestigious Meursault appellation, it is the source of the château’s emblematic wine.
