Halfway between Beaune and Dijon, an unusual venue is making its contribution to Burgundy’s cultural edifice. We’re talking, of course, about La Karrière! With its rough walls covered in colourful frescoes and its large open-air space decorated with contemporary sculptures, who would have thought that this place was once dedicated to stone quarrying? Here, enjoy a dance show, party the night away, sing along to rock’n’roll music and let yourself be carried away by the magic of the Côte-d’Or. It’s as simple as that!

When stone meets street art, the result is an unmissable site in Burgundy. And it was in 2016 that the tide turned on this abandoned former quarry not far from Dijon and Beaune. The ivory of the stone walls gave way to the pop colours of eclectic frescoes, while the immense empty space was lined with contemporary sculptures. As for the silence, it has been filled with music, celebration and heartfelt laughter. And that’s how the quarry became La Karrière!

The artists who made Karrière

It’s impossible not to keep an eye on the murals at La Karrière. And with good reason! These works have been created by passionate graffiti artists with reputationsbeyond the borders of Burgundy and even France. So it’s hardly surprising that you’ll see the work of Jace, André and Mode 2. As well as the vibrant colours and eccentric shapes, these artists have one thing in common: a love of grapes! With the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne just around the corner, the Côte-d’Or and the world of winegrowing continue to inspire those who wield a paintbrush. The result is a mosaic of symbols that is, to say the least, flashy.
