Want to get off the beaten track and get some height? Saint-Romain invites you to discover the Côte de Beaune in a different way, with its raw nature, spectacular scenery and characterful village.

Getting there

Saint-Romain, a suspended village

Like a golden eagle, imagine yourself soaring above the impressive cliffs of the Côte de Beaune, dominating the village of Saint-Romain, south of the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne! Here, millions of years of geological upheaval have created a striking natural setting for the vineyards and the village, whose top and bottom are sure to turn your head!

Must-sees in the village

The immense cirque of limestone cliffs that serves as the village’s XXL backdrop is home to elegant white wines and fruity reds, the fruit of a clay-limestone terroir sculpted by time and recognised as one of the UNESCO-listed Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne. Since 1947, local winegrowers have built up a fine reputation and stocked some of the finest cellars in the world… so why not yours?

Here, heritage is everywhere: the ruins of a medieval castle, a 15th-century church, wash-houses and winegrowers’ cottages all tell a lively and fascinating story. Once you’ve got your trainers on, it’s up to you to decide whether to start at the top or the bottom of this two-storey village. And for budding archaeologists, a diversion to the prehistory museum (housed in the town hall) will open the door to the unique remains unearthed during excavations carried out at the 2 local sites over 50 years ago.

In Saint-Romain, there are plenty of spots with a view. But one thing’s for sure, wherever you go, you’re bound to get that famous wow factor! Whether it’s from the edge of the cliffs (but not too close to the edge), from the bench overlooking the village on the site of the old castle or from “Fort Champagne”, your picnics and photos will have the flavour of the unforgettable. And if you’re a keen walker, don’t forget to download the free ‘Balades en Bourgogne’ app, so you can follow the ‘ voie des vignes ‘ or the ‘sentier des roches ‘, which are sure to take you to the ends of the earth!

Saint-Romain, a thousand-year-old village that's still very much alive

Saint-Romain cultivates an identity that is both intimate and vibrant. With just 200 inhabitants, it offers an authentic atmosphere, coupled with the Burgundian conviviality that can be savoured at the Bistrot des Falaises. Local and authentic gastronomy are the watchwords here, with the added bonus of thehospitality and creativity of chef Bertrand Gueucier. Add to this the wine-tasting cellars, vineyard walks and charming accommodation, and Saint-Romain is sure to become an inspiring stop-off on the Burgundy Grands Crus Route.
