Pommard

Pommard, the village where Pinot Noir has its kingdom

On the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne in the Côte-d’Or, Pommard is a picture-postcard wine village nestling between Beaune and Volnay. Here you can breathe in pure Burgundy: blonde stones, the scent of vats and history. Here, every step tells the story of Burgundy, its heritage, its traditions and its art of living. Pommard is a magnet for lovers of exceptional wines, local produce and encounters. It’s impossible to remain indifferent: everything here tells the story of the vine.

Getting there

A village steeped in history

A stroll through Pommard reveals some astonishing treasures: the Pierre Brûlée dolmen dates back to the Neolithic period, and the Lulune spring nestles in the hills above the village, dating back to the Bronze Age. As for the astonishing Fontaine de l’Artichaut (Artichoke fountain ) and the 18th-century church of Saint-Pierre, they set the pace in the heart of the village. Once you’ve passed the châteaux and fortified houses that give the village its chic etiquette, you can marvel at the reconstituted “cabotte” in the Place de l’Europe, a reminder that winegrowers in the surrounding vineyards work all year round to bring you the very best!

Must-sees in the village

Pommard is 314 hectares of vines dedicated exclusively to Pinot Noir, an appellation created in 1936, and 28 Premier Crus with names as poetic as they are powerful: Les Rugiens, Les Épenots, Les Chaponnières…

In the blink of an eye, you recognise the signature of the appellation: a deep, dark ruby red, vibrant with blackberry, bilberry and Morello cherry aromas, but also evolving towards leather, pepper and chocolate, with that emblematic tannic chewiness. Since the 19th century, Pommard has been known as “the flower of Beaune wines”. It’s not a myth, but a reality: Pommard is the signature red wine of the Côte de Beaune.

A few pedal strokes and you’re on your way to the Voie des Vignes, heading for Volnay, Meursault or Santenay, gourd full at the Fontaine de l’Artichaut. The route has been awarded the “Vélo & Fromages” label, so it’s a good excuse to try “Délice de Pommard“, a fresh, creamy cow’s milk cheese created by a local cheesemaker! The cheese is a perfect match for the vintages on offer in the village cellars, where tastings can be enjoyed under the vaulted ceilings.

For its part, Château de Pommard offers a rare and exclusive experience: a vertical tasting of Clos Marey-Monge, ideal for grasping the role of time and climate.
It is said that Pommard “fills the mouth and the glass”. We can confirm that.
