Roots as old as wine
The name “Pernand” comes from the Celtic and means “the spring that gets lost”. And that’s the spirit of the place: mysterious, soothing, eternal. As far back as the Middle Ages, Charles Martel owned vineyards here, which were later given to his grandson Charlemagne – a royal legacy for an exceptional terroir. Below, the Mère Fontaine, the wash-houses and the 12th-century church are reminders that stone has a long memory here. If you look up, Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance stands guard over the vineyards.
