Monthélie

Monthélie, the discreet energy of the Côte de Beaune

Away from the busiest route, Monthélie is cultivating a more confidential, but far from forgotten, Burgundy Grands Crus route. Nestling between Volnay and Meursault, the village strikes a perfect balance between open countryside, expressive vineyards and a peaceful atmosphere. An ideal stop-off for those who like to go behind the scenes… without losing any of the emotion.

Getting there

Monthélie, a land on the move

At Monthélie (pronounced Monthelie), the vines follow the contours of the land. The well-exposed slopes are underlain by clay-limestone soils, giving rise to wines that are fresh, structured and elegant.

The appellation produces white wines from Chardonnay and red wines from Pinot Noir, with a high proportion of Premiers Crus. In the glass, the reds reveal notes of red fruit and great tension, while the whites seduce with their liveliness and mineral finesse. These are sincere, precise wines that tell the story of their terroir without overdoing it.

Must-sees in the village

Monthélie is best discovered at a leisurely pace. The quiet lanes, winegrowers’ houses and vineyard paths offer a gentle stroll, punctuated by pretty views of the surrounding hillsides. A perfect backdrop for experiencing the rhythm of the vineyards, away from the hustle and bustle.

Monthélie is also an excellent base from which to reach Volnay, Meursault or Auxey-Duresses by foot. On foot or by bike, the routes wind through vineyards and valleys, offering superb panoramic views of the Côte de Beaune.

Here, the estates remain on a human scale. Tastings take place in a simple, warm atmosphere, conducive to conversation. We talk about terroir, vintages and the work in the vineyard, while discovering vintages that are often little-known… and some very nice surprises.

Monthélie, simple elegance

Monthélie has nothing to prove. And that’s precisely what makes it so charming. With its vineyards, peaceful atmosphere and energetic wines, the village embodies a sincere and accessible Burgundy. A wonderful interlude on the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne, to be savoured without hurry.
