Côte de Nuits: the royal ruby of Burgundy Between grands crus, legendary estates and the art of living

On the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne, between Dijon and Beaune, via Nuits-Saint-Georges, lies the Côte de Nuits, the kingdom of Pinot Noir, legendary estates and exhilarating escapades. Here, every tasting becomes a tête-à-tête with the vineyard, every cellar tells a story, and every village embodies the Burgundian art of living. Ready to lift the veil on this jewel?

Where does the name come from?

Why “Côte de Nuits“? The name comes from Nuits-Saint-Georges, the bastion and southern gateway to the vineyards. “Côte” refers to the wine-growing hillside facing east, “Nuits” to this emblematic village on the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne. Together, they form a poetic expression: that of a wine-growing ridge where the slope, the limestone and the morning light combine to give birth to exceptional wines.

The Côte de Nuits stretches over some fifteen of Burgundy’s most prestigious communes. Predominantly devoted to red wines, it produces Pinot Noir, its king, as well as some rare, elegant whites. Nine Grands Crus share the glory of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. With the Vignobles & Découvertes label, the Côte de Nuits is an invitation to explore: visits, tours, open cellars, walks and passionate encounters.

A few anecdotes to share between two drinks

The Clos de Vougeot once belonged to the monks of Cîteaux before becoming the château of the Chevaliers du Tastevin.

The Grand Cru “La Grande Rue” in Vosne-Romanée covers just 1.65 hectares – hardly more than a football pitch!

Marsannay produces red, white and rosé wines – a rarity in the Côte de Nuits, where Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety.

Château de Marsannay, owned by the Boisseaux family, was built in 1990. A “youngster” that illustrates the perfect blend of tradition and modernity.

What you need to know about the Côte de Nuits

Imagine walking among the golden vines in autumn, smelling the fragrance of fermenting wine, listening to a winemaker tell the story of a plot of land. This is the Côte de Nuits: a place where wine is experienced, listened to and shared.

Tasting here means learning to read the vineyard like an open book: each climate has its own history, each terroir its own personality. The Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges appellations are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The estates, which are often family-run and sometimes confidential, open their doors by appointment. Some châteaux are only open to visitors at certain times of the year: a good reason to come back!

Events not to be missed

Vignobles en Scène: every autumn, the vineyards come alive with concerts, walks and open-air tastings.

Fête du Vin Bourru: on 18 and 19 October 2025, Nuits-Saint-Georges celebrates the arrival of new wine in a joyous and popular atmosphere.

Climats Month: in June and July, workshops, concerts and estate openings celebrate the Climats of Burgundy on the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.

The World Egg Meurette Championships, at the Château du Clos de Vougeot, every 2nd weekend in October, to learn all about poaching eggs and making a red wine sauce.

A unique sensory experience

On the Côte de Nuits, wine is more than just a beverage: it’s a language. The soil speaks, the climate whispers, and the glass translates the fragile harmony between man and nature. Each tasting is a revelation, each bottle a memory. Here, Burgundy is contemplated, breathed in and savoured – slowly, passionately.
