The Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction

Published on 10 July 2025

Every 3rd weekend in November, Beaune hosts the world’s oldest charity auction (which finances the running of the town’s Hospices civils, no less!). It’s an event that combines philanthropy and showbiz, with buyers coming from the 4 corners of the globe and celebrities pledging their support to a charity every year. But for the general public, it’s also a popular festival, where you can stroll through the lively streets of the town, in the heart of the Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne in the Côte-d’Or.

The famous auctions

Since the 19th century, the auction room has been on fire, constantly breaking new records. Bidders raise their hands, and millions of euros soar with each blow of the hammer. The highlight of the show is the sale of the charity item, defended by an international star in aid of a charity, which always triggers thunderous applause and emotional sequences.

Running for pleasure

You don’t have to be a millionaire to take advantage: while collectors vie for the Grands Crus, sports enthusiasts put on their trainers (and dress up… or not) for the half-marathon that winds its way through the mythical landscapes of the Côte de Beaune. And for those with a sweet tooth, stay in the town centre of the Burgundy wine capital to sample the local specialities, in the festive atmosphere of the Burgundy festivals.

In 10 minutes, you can go from a concert on Place Carnot to a procession of winegrowers in traditional costume. In 1 hour, you can also immerse yourself in one of Burgundy’s architectural jewels: the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune, with its flamboyant glazed roof and famous Salle des Pôvres. Created in the 15th century, this monument is a true symbol of innovation and generosity, and above all, it is the REAL starting point for this incredible tradition of charity sales.

What else ?

For wine lovers, the magic doesn’t stop at the auctions: you can take your place at the Paulée, a joyful table where food and wine are shared, or at the Chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, where the Burgundian art of living is expressed in festive rituals. Here, every smile has the taste of a grand cru. Impossible to resist: the Hospices de Beaune Wine Sale is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
